View Full Version : How do I connect my computer to an amp?

I have an idea that I would like to connect my computer audio out to the AUX of my amp. Several reasons - more output :) and easier to plug a pair of headphones in when needed.

Is it just a question of LINE OUT on the computer to AUX on the amp? It seems that simple but I was worried about the LINE OUT on the computer being amplified already. I don't seem to have a raw LINE OUT on the on-board sound of the ASUS P4C800 Deluxe mobo.

If the LINE OUT is amplified - won't it distort?

Cheers for any help.

I just use the normal speaker out (green one) 3.5mm jack into the two RCAs of the AUX in of my amp.

Snorted. :)

The line out will have a very small amount of amplification (just about enough to power a set of in-ear earphones) - thats why you always have to use powered speakers with your computer.

To hook it all up you just need to get a 3.5mm stereo jack -> phono cable [example (http://imagehost.darkernet.co.uk/i/jack-phono.jpg)] plug it in and away you go.

You'll probably have to fiddle around with the audio output levels on your computer to get it to your satisfaction.

I always use my amp and speakers for my computer audio now because it sounds so much better and annoyes everyone else :D
